Seal of the Township of Upper

HomePrevious

Today the Township is made up of 10 small villages or towns: Beesleys Point, Marmora, Palermo, Seaville, Tuckahoe, Greenfield, Marshallville, Steelmantown, Petersburg and Strathmere. A little known fact about Strathmere is that it was not always a part of Upper Township. In 1905, the community of Strathmere was annexed unto the Township of Upper. The cost was $31,500.00. This agreement was made at a meeting of the Township Committee held on the I st day of May, 1905 at the Hotel in Tuckahoe. Its purpose was to adjust the bonded indebtedness of Sea Isle City.

The Township is self sufficient and has all of the services and needs for a full community municipality.

At the last census of 1990, the total population of the Township was 10.681 with an influx of younger married couples with children the population was estimated at 11,220 in 1996. Summer time population figures swell near 20,000.

Over the years, employment opportunities have expanded, and with  the addition of the casino industry in Atlantic City have come opportunities that several years ago did not exist. The Township is dotted with many businesses serving many of the residents' needs. Connectiv and New Jersey Bell both have facilities located in Upper Township.

The Township offers great vacation opportunities. There are beaches in Strathmere, Tuckahoe and Beesleys Point. Campgrounds are located throughout. There are parks, golf courses, and areas for boating and canoeing.

Much of what Upper Township is today is due in part to the many volunteers who serve on the various boards. The Planning and Zoning Boards have done an excellent job controlling business and residential growth to preserve the quality of life.
